Record Club 6th Post📝 [Bedtime Reading] Bedtime reading is a sleep routine that has been going on for over 10 years, since the time when my first child was called ‘Daebak-i’. Before going to bed, I turn on the night light and read the books I borrowed that day and the books that the children each chose. After 10 years of lying close to my children and reading books while falling asleep together, I finally succeeded in becoming independent in bed on May 7, 2024. I tried every time when my second child became an elementary school student, but failed every time (when I open my eyes in the morning, he is already sleeping next to me), but one day, I suddenly gave him a note that said, ‘I promise I will sleep alone from today onwards’ and he has been sleeping well ever since. The children were so happy that they were excited that they made a book called <Bedtime Independence Story> and bought a cake to celebrate. After becoming independent in bed, I read books to the children in their bedrooms and gave them lots of goodnight kisses before leaving the room, and it felt strange. It may have been me who kept postponing bedtime independence with the excuse that the kids still wanted to sleep with their mom. When the kids stopped coming, I would sneak to their beds and hug them once when I woke up in the morning with a feeling of emptiness. When I couldn’t sleep while breastfeeding my two kids, I wondered when I would be able to sleep comfortably, but the difficult times were quickly forgotten and only longing remained. The kids hate night the most because they don’t have enough time to play even after playing all day, and when I asked them why, they said it was because they didn’t want to go to bed. They felt like it was a waste of time to sleep. (The saying, “Just have fun in dreamland” no longer works.) It seems like they keep shouting, “Just one more book!” because they can sleep late if they read books. On days when my throat hurts or I’m tired, I naturally say, “Let’s stop reading and go to bed,” and when that happens, my oldest son steps forward. “I’ll read Jisoo a book!” You really hate sleeping... Unlike me, you read books in a voice as bright and cheerful as a nightingale, without any trace of fatigue. The two of you take turns reading the dialogue humorously and then laugh so hard that you can't turn the page. In the meantime, sleep runs away even further. It's no exception when you travel. There was even an incident where you had to open your checked luggage carrier at the airport and take out the books because it was too heavy because it was full of books. It's thanks to the kids who have to read at least one book to fall asleep even when they're tired from playing late at night. It's clear that consistent bedtime reading played a big role in my wish to 'raise children who love books.' My husband, who joined me in reading books despite his busy schedule, also contributed greatly. I will exercise consistently to build up stamina comparable to children who don't get tired. I want to keep this up as long as possible. Because I know that the day I miss this moment is not far off. Because there are still so many books I want to read together.
