Koreans say that the tree they love the most is the zelkova tree, but in fact, there probably aren’t many people who can pinpoint the exact zelkova tree. However, since they are so widely planted, when you see a tree with thick foliage while walking down the street and wonder, “What kind of tree is this?”, most of the time, it’s either a zelkova tree or a cherry tree. Since it’s complicated, I’ll just say that if the leaves are a little long, it’s a zelkova tree, and if they’re a little round, it’s a cherry tree. The zelkova tree is used as furniture, and its leaves are used as food and medicine. It has also played the role of a zelkova tree that has protected the village from evil spirits since ancient times. I think it’s because it’s not only close to us, but also because its role is diverse and varied depending on the time, that’s why Koreans love it the most. I called my mother while passing by the zelkova tree in my neighborhood. Even just talking about lunch menus and the weather made me smile. Sometimes, it’s like an innocent child, sometimes a playful friend, and sometimes like the shade of a tree that embraces us endlessly. After I hung up the phone, the complicated world became much simpler. This is what it means to be comforted by just your presence.    A person like a zelkova tree that is always the same but also exists in various forms, the closest to me.
