They say he was rescued with his siblings in Gurye, Jeollanam-do. We named him Dojang after the neighborhood we live in, Dojang-ri. Dojang's tail is broken in the middle, so it's still hard. The siblings who were rescued like Dojang also had tails that were very short like rabbits or broken in the middle. When I first saw the cat at the shelter, I thought its broken tail looked like Pikachu's tail. I suspected that it was abandoned as a baby because its tail was not normal, but to us, Dojang's broken tail is not unusual, but a very special tail. My husband, an architect, once published a book about the architecture of houses where cats live together. However, when we were planning our house, we didn’t have any pets, so we designed a house just for people. When Dojang-i comes home, I think about what kind of space would be for cats. I raise the sofa slightly from the wall to create a side path just for cats, put a ladder for cats that want to climb high and look outside, and make stairs here and there with furniture for cats that only look up to go higher. When I see cats looking down from high places in angles that I have never seen before, I suddenly wonder what our house looks like from the cat’s perspective. When I follow the cat’s gaze, small moments that are easy to miss in everyday life come to me in a new way. By looking at the world through those mysterious eyes, I feel like I am learning a little more about the world every day.
