Almost every inch of wall in this centuries-old house near the French city bears witness to Benoît Lumeau d’Hauterives’s passion for drawing and historic interior details – not to mention his perfectionism. For if the highly skilled artist and specialist painter decides he doesn’t like the results, he simply reaches for the whitewash and starts painstakingly sketching all over again… By Tim Beddow 27 July 2024 The Pierre Loti-inspired salon was made in memory of Benoît’s Algerian-born mother Artist Benoît Lumeau d’Hauterives’s house is, simply, a shrine to mural decoration. En plus, it emanates a magical time warp, for its painted walls, almost every square millimetre of them, reflect myriad historical eras, along with family relationships and inspiration from a book on a 17th-century Italian palazzo. The walls are the catalyst: as Benoît says: ‘The wall is blind by nature, but for me its appearance can never be neutral or casual as it has the power to transform and create a special atmosphere.’ The house lies in a pretty fortified village an hour south of Bordeaux, Benoît’s home town, and was found by him and his Belgian partner, Wouter, on the internet in 2004, a couple of years after they had moved to the city.
