I was using it with just the mattress on top of the rug, but I was worried about moisture and drafts during the summer, so I bought a low-profile frame. 😍 Since I was using just the mattress, I thought about using a high frame, but the bedroom felt too cramped, and I didn't think I could use the bookshelf and desk in the bedroom. So, I chose a low-profile frame.
