It feels a bit embarrassing to call this a know-how(?), but if I were to record my third interior decorating tip, it would be: "Try making props yourself instead of buying them!" Back when backdrop painting props were popular for a while, I have a piece I painted myself at an art studio. I imagined what it would look like to place this painting in my home, so I freely expressed the colors and textures.
