As I reached my 15th year, I began to worry about the aging condition of my parents' building. Having a strong interest in interior design, I used the money I saved while working to renovate three units in my parents' building over the course of two years, gaining experience and learning from trial and error. For this latest renovation, intended for my husband and one-year-old child, I remodeled a duplex home consisting of a main living space of 18 pyeong (two bedrooms + living room + kitchen) and a 10 pyeong studio-style attic connected by an indoor staircase. This project involved the complete demolition of the ceiling, walls, floors, stairs, and bathroom; removal of the city gas line; installation of electrical connections for capacity upgrades; extension of the bathroom underfloor heating pipes; replacement of windows and kitchen sinks; installation of a system air conditioner; installation of a spiral staircase; insulation, and much more. This was the fourth and largest interior renovation project I have undertaken. When I first planned the renovation, I lacked knowledge of electrical and carpentry work. Since I was working full-time, I felt I wouldn't be able to focus on the interior work, so I was introduced to an interior contractor by a worker and had a meeting with them. However, the total cost of hiring a contractor was about 30 percent higher than doing it semi-DIY, and I was dissatisfied with the fact that they proceeded without blueprints. Therefore, I did not sign a contract after the consultation. Afterward, I searched through reviews on Soomgo to find a contractor. I contacted workers I had been satisfied with during a previous renovation on another floor and proceeded with the work. Having looked at other experts' beautiful homes on Today's House, I had a clear concept for the house I had personally wanted for a long time, so I had no difficulty getting started. However, as the renovation progressed, I felt some regret because I missed certain details due to a lack of knowledge regarding finishing. Since my apartment is not very large, I was very concerned about how to use the space as efficiently as possible. Therefore, to make the small space appear as spacious as possible, we installed a system air conditioner. We removed the entire ceiling to secure space for laying the system piping and then proceeded with ceiling construction to raise the ceiling height as high as possible. Since having a child, storage space became woefully insufficient, so I sought to maximize storage capacity. I also wanted to remove the middle door connecting the veranda and the kitchen and create an arched gate to make the kitchen look larger. Instead of the middle door, I removed the existing single-pane veranda window connecting to the outside, replaced it with a double-pane window, and reinforced it with insulation to prevent drafts. The small room connected to the kitchen veranda had windows on two sides. Placing a storage cabinet on the side with the window made opening and closing the window inconvenient, and placing a bed made the space too cold. Therefore, I boldly removed the window on one side to block it off and configured the space for a built-in wardrobe. When we removed the window in the small room, a space equivalent to the thickness of the wall that used to connect to the veranda was created. I thought it would be better to turn it into a storage space rather than just blocking it off, so I turned it into a storage compartment during the carpentry work, and I think it was a great decision. As I mentioned at the very beginning, the house we are renovating this time has a duplex structure. It is a duplex consisting of a main living space of 18 pyeong plus a 10 pyeong attic, and is designed to be accessed via a spiral staircase inside. Due to the limited space, there were no other options besides the spiral staircase. However, I love the beauty of the curves that a spiral staircase offers, so I think I would have chosen the spiral staircase even if other types of stairs had been possible. Upon climbing the stairs, the existing attic had a 'S'-shaped ceiling and a studio-style structure with no separate room. Since there was a lot of unused dead space, I spent a lot of time thinking about how to utilize it. While the ceiling height was high at the top center of the 'S'-shaped ceiling, the lowest point on the outer edge was only about 130cm high, which was too low for an adult to walk around comfortably. So, in the low and narrow spaces that were previously unusable, we built bookshelves and custom-made built-in wardrobes to utilize them as storage, or arranged a long sofa to create a seating area. Additionally, to separate the space, we constructed a partition wall along the bathroom wall to create a room. I'm tired today, so I'll stop here for now haha.
