Having lived in a house where an island was a luxury and the countertop was only about two handspans wide, I never even attempted to build one, thinking, "Why would I need an island?" Why did I do that? 😇 I'm currently using two bookshelves placed back-to-back as a temporary solution, but as time goes by, I find myself desperately wanting to build an island. I plan to build an island and install a partition door by the end of this year. Also, the more I live here, the more convenient the layout for the refrigerator is; I understand why people opt for open-plan kitchens.
