After realizing that black accents on a white background look the cleanest in my home, I've been practicing keeping the background white and the accessories black. However, to maintain a ratio of about 7:3 white to black, I'm trying not to go too far as a maximalist, by decluttering what needs to be decluttered and changing what needs to be changed.
