I maintain it by periodically taking out the bottom filter and lightly wiping off the water stains. Since I pre-wash, there is almost no food residue, but it is definitely good to check the filter once in a while. I also consistently refill the salt. You can really feel the difference in water stains depending on whether you use it or not. For drum cleaning, I use a tablet-type cleaner. I tried several different ones before settling on this one. It is convenient because you just put one in the detergent dispenser and run it, and most importantly, the scent lasts a long time after washing, so it is a product I keep using.
