The Iittala Alvar Aalto vase🌷, which often appeared as an example during basic design classes. It is a vase with stunning organic curves, but at the same time, for art school applicants, it is a vase that is difficult to express with high density through sketching☺️. In a design history where cold functionalism focused on straight lines was the mainstream, these soft curves, resembling Finland's lakes and coastlines, became a symbol of organic modernism. Even now, the traditional method of artisans hand-blowing the vase at the Iittala factory in Finland is still maintained. Because it is handmade, the shape varies slightly, but thanks to that, just having this vase nearby makes me feel like I own a one-of-a-kind piece of art🫶🏻. Actually, at first I thought the wide opening might make it difficult to arrange flowers, but thanks to the curved lines and asymmetrical structure, it is sufficient even with just a single flower. 📍 I remember that when I explained the design background and structural features to my students while teaching, they remembered it longer and found it more interesting. I am writing this in the hope that this vase will linger in your eyes a little longer, too.
