🏠 Our home is an older apartment building that is over 40 years old. You probably consider plumbing work if you live in an apartment that is over 30 years old. We also agonized over whether or not to do plumbing work (we really wanted to avoid it if possible 🥲), and if so, whether to go with a full pipe installation or a trenching installation 🤔 In the end, even though it cost 2 to 3 times more and took more time, we decided to go with a full "pipe installation" and proceeded with the construction 🔨 I wanted a home that was solid on the inside, not just pretty on the outside, so now I think we made the right choice! 🙂 Let me explain the difference between a full pipe installation and a trenching installation! ✅ Full Pipe Installation • Features: A project that involves completely breaking up the floor down to the concrete and removing the old one. • Cost: 8–10 million KRW (varies by size) • Pros: No risk of leaks, high heating efficiency, excellent floor leveling • Cons: High cost, long construction period (at least 1 week considering curing time) ✅ Grooving Installation • Features: A method where the existing floor is maintained, and a new path is created (=grooved) next to the existing pipes to install the new pipes. • Cost: Around 3 million KRW (varies by size) • Pros: Cost-effectiveness compared to full pipe installation, short construction period (2-3 days) • Cons: Heating fluctuations may occur because the new pipes are laid around the existing pipe locations; there is a risk due to main pipe debris as the existing pipes remain; in older buildings, the floors are often uneven and warped, and this must be accommodated during the installation. 📍 “Full Pipe Installation” is recommended for: • Like my house, built 30–40 years ago If the time has passed and reconstruction is expected to take more than 10 years • If you inquire with real estate agencies or the district office and are told that the plumbing in your unit is copper • If you have ample time and budget for interior renovations • If you do not want the mental stress associated with disputes with neighbors 📍 “Grove Digging” is recommended for these types of people • If your budget and construction period are tight • If you do not intend to live there for more than 10 years and want cost-effective renovations • If you are most concerned about noise complaints from neighbors I believe that for older buildings, the substance within the finishing materials is more important than just a pretty interior.
