I have never truly enjoyed the night sky. To me, night was always "the time when the day ends," not a time when something begins. When I received the theme for this IDO ceramics collaboration, the phrase "unfamiliar tastes I hadn't attempted before" lingered in my mind for quite some time. It wasn't the colors that were unfamiliar; I began to think that perhaps the "time" itself—a place I have never truly lingered in—was the most unfamiliar taste to me. That is how the "Night in the Forest" cup was born. I captured stars that pat me on the back for having had a good day, and deep green grass that fully recharges me with the energy of nature for a happier tomorrow, within the cup. The style of expression utilizes the rough and free feel characteristic of oil pastels, capturing the sensations of an unplanned night exactly as they are. I chose crayons—where the strength of the hand and emotion touch the paper directly—instead of smooth, refined lines, because this design represents "a night I am lingering in for the first time." I depicted an unfamiliar time in an unfamiliar way. If my usual work was "colors that give energy"! This collaboration is "a night that makes you pause for a moment." Just as I captured a time I have never lived in on this cup, if someone who, like me, is unfamiliar with the night finds their first moment of familiarity with it while holding this cup and drinking a warm cup of tea—that is enough.
