I keep my books and frequently used items organized together on the IKEA steel shelves in the living room. Since open shelves can easily look cluttered, I separated what I want to show from what I want to hide. I leave my favorite books and objects out with some empty space, while I organize small items and books I don't look at often using storage boxes and bookshelves. I think leaving some empty space instead of filling the shelves completely is the key to keeping the open shelves tidy!
