I believe that when turning a living room into a study in a home with a baby, especially if the child is 5 years old or younger, the setup should be tailored to that stage. We are building our home based on these criteria: 📚 The child can take out books independently → Not just having Mom read to them, but allowing them to encounter books like play in their daily lives and choose for themselves. 📚 Books are visible before toys → Creating an environment where toys do not get mixed up. 📚 Can be tidied up within 5 minutes → It should be a space that is easy to maintain consistently, rather than focusing on making it pretty or expensive. (So that even if the child takes books out haphazardly, they can be put back in their proper places quickly!) 📚 A natural reading spot every day → To make reading a comfortable part of daily life, rather than a special event. 📚 A space where parents also want to stay → To make it a living room that the family uses together, rather than a space where the child makes a mess and the parents clean it up. For parents who are already overwhelmed by childcare alone during the early childhood years when messiness is a daily occurrence, I believe the living room study should be a space to linger comfortably rather than a study space. I plan to go ahead and explain these five criteria in detail, one by one. From living room layout to bookshelves, storage, and balance with the play area.
