The contractor went silent 🚨 #WhatHappenedDuringRemodeling I thought the whole process would be over once I bought my own home, but the real beginning was the remodeling. I started remodeling my house just before my wedding. I postponed the gate construction because of a tight budget, but surprisingly, many people were freely coming and going in our yard. Furthermore, since I was planning to be away from home for an extended period, I urgently looked for a gate contractor. And that is where things started to go wrong. “Materials will arrive tomorrow.” “There was a traffic accident today.” “Please postpone it for just one day.” These phrases kept repeating, and then, at some point, all contact was cut off. The construction had started but then stopped abruptly. They hadn't even properly drawn up a contract. Eventually, giving up on waiting, my dad and husband bought the materials and paint themselves, and finished the gate. After finishing, I had only one thought. “If I knew it would be like this, I should have done it myself from the start…” However, at the time, wedding preparations overlapped with the remodeling, so I didn’t even have the energy to fight with the contractor. I just chose to get it done quickly. After going through this experience, here are the things I decided I must remember when remodeling 👇🏻 1️⃣ Don’t rush the construction The more rushed you are, the less time you have to properly compare contractors. I recommend scheduling the construction with plenty of leeway if possible. 2️⃣ Always be meticulous with the contract Don’t just trust the claim that “everything is possible” Make sure to include the following details in the contract: ✔ Construction start date ✔ Construction completion date ✔ Final payment date ✔ Responsibility for construction delays 3️⃣ Think twice about contractors that are too cheap Just because something is expensive doesn’t mean it’s necessarily good, but I found it risky to choose a company solely because it is cheap. The contractor we chose was very disappointing in terms of communication and construction quality, and in the end, my dad and husband personally reworked the finished product that had already been completed halfway through. 4️⃣ Consider whether additional work is really necessary When remodeling, you will hear the phrase, "If you do this together, we can give you a discount," very often. I also ended up spending much more than my initial budget because I added various things like awnings and partition walls. Looking back now, there are many things that I think, "I could have done it without doing them." Remodeling is a process of creating a beautiful home, but I think it is also a process of choosing a good contractor. Have you ever had an experience while remodeling where you thought, "I really made a mistake"?
