A standalone older apartment building over 20 years old. I experienced some unexpected moments while remodeling😅 I heard that older buildings have many variables and are difficult to handle yourself, so I went with a turnkey approach, and I think I made the right choice. 1. Floors more fragile than glass After removing the existing flooring, I found floors here and there that crumbled at the slightest touch!! In particular, the veranda area, which had already been extended, and the corners with ledges were in a worse condition than glass. I originally didn't add floor leveling work, but thanks to the contractor taking the initiative to fill in the severely cracked areas with cement and sand the floor, the flooring installation proceeded smoothly. 🤔 If you are planning to do it yourself, you must check the floor condition after removal and discuss it with a flooring contractor before proceeding. 2. Can I install just any boiler? No!!! Eco-friendly condensing boilers have a single drain pipe. Older boilers installed in older buildings often lack such a pipe, so they are frequently located far from the drain. We ordered and installed an eco-friendly boiler separately right after the demolition without giving it much thought. Oh my... the distance to the drain was nearly 2 meters. The shock of seeing that thick, unsightly drain hose lying sprawled on the laundry room floor is still vivid in my memory😅 Fortunately, since we installed the boiler first before the other construction work, the contractor covered up the drain hose while they were working on the tiles :) 🤔 If you are considering replacing your boiler, I recommend choosing a model without a drain hose, or discussing with the contractor in advance whether they can install the boiler first and tidy up the pipes during the construction process, just like we did^^ 3. Perfect alignment in an older building... That is a completely unrealistic wish. Hahaha. Especially in single-unit apartments, the quality of workmanship is often poor, so it is common for vertical and horizontal alignments to be off. In our house, the floor and ceiling aren't level, and the walls are warped in many places;; So, one of the things you need to pay special attention to is choosing wallpaper! Choosing wallpaper with a plaster texture is also a good idea so that the uneven wall surface doesn't stand out too much. For baseboard installation, it is essential to have a worker who can install it meticulously so that it adheres securely to the curved wall. 🤔 If you have a generous budget, it is also a good idea to level the floor with carpentry work before proceeding with other construction processes. There are countless other things I experienced since this is an older building, but I feel like I’ll be up all night at this rate, so I’ll wrap it up here haha.
