My previous room also looked much smaller than its actual size because the bed, clothes rack, storage items, and desk were placed separately. When I moved, I decided to start by getting rid of as many items as possible from the open, rather than bringing in more pretty furniture. I put clothes inside the built-in closet, routed the wires under the desk using a stand, and used a monitor arm to utilize the tabletop more widely. Even though the room is the same size, reducing the visible space on the floor and desk made a significant difference in the usable area.
