The weather has turned cooler, and Deoksugung Palace fills you with anticipation from the moment you enter. Inside is the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Late evening. A special invitation reserved exclusively for the invited guests 💌 Once again, hosted with the sponsorship of LG Electronics, a company truly dedicated to art, this is a massive exhibition capturing the 70-year artistic career of painter Lee Dae-won. 《Lee Dae-won: Nothing Makes You Sad》 7-meter canvases…! The sheer size and captivating colors are so overwhelming that it would require a separate airplane per painting to transport them intact. And the fascinating storytelling—like a successful fan telling a story—from the docent who made the precious trip to the Seoul branch, boasting top-notch job satisfaction 😉. Painter Lee Dae-won was an elite who had been selected for the Joseon Art Exhibition since his teens and even majored in law at Keijo Imperial University—a prestigious institution where only the most brilliant students could attend given the historical context of the time—yet he ultimately chose the brush. He was a perfect hexagonal figure who painted Western art, yet incorporated his craftsmanship and the formative elements of Eastern painting into his endeavors. He constantly followed the flow of life, never settling for complacency, and clearly painted his own distinct style. Through this exhibition, I also came to know Lee Dae-won’s excellent mentor, Sato Kunio.
