When I first received it, I had no idea how to use it, but: 1. Turn it counterclockwise to release the inner rod and extend its length. 2. Pull it out slightly longer than the desired fixing length. 3. Push the inner rod in with force (just push it in with some force; you will feel the spring compressing) and insert it into the desired fixing spot. I hung 100% blackout curtains, so they were very heavy, but they don't fall off even when I pull on them with my hands!! Its sturdiness is truly top-notch! *For those using eyelet curtains like me, the part where the inner and outer rods connect gets caught when you draw the curtain, so it doesn't slide over easily. However, since you can just hold the top to draw it, it isn't that inconvenient!!
