The kitchen originally had built-in shelves that reached all the way to the ceiling, and the previous owner had used them to store a lot of dishes, but I replaced them with a counter to make the room look larger. I like the counter because it's a little high so I can work on it, but the smell of cooking fills the living room, so I think there are pros and cons to it. Fortunately, there are openings on the north and south sides so the wind can escape, but it's a pain on hot days because you can't open them.
