We are smack in the middle of a kitchen renovation, and I feel like it’s important to share the reality of what that looks like. We started with a very 1980s kitchen – white shiny cabinets, laminate counters, blue watercolor floor tile, peel and stick backsplash and teal walls. We are on a tight budget, so I’m using everything I can from the original kitchen, while adding, adjusting and finessing the space to fit our 1890s Victorian home. We painted the cabinets taupe and built a new wall of cabinets for a pantry. I’m currently tiling the floors with a slate look tile in a herringbone pattern. And I’m going to try changing the look of the counters with contact paper. Next up, I’ll be putting up a new marble backsplash, creating a coffee nook, and changing the lighting. One of the frugal tricks that I use is to utilize modular furniture and open shelves, which are more affordable than custom built-ins. In addition, choosing neutral colors and durable materials makes this kitchen less boring. ➖ My Dream Kitchen Previously, the kitchen in this house was just a cast table built by the developer which was requested to have black granite attached to the walls and table top. The first concept was also an open shelves kitchen. But because it looked full and messy, in the end we installed a full cabinet (kitchen set) to the end of the kitchen area, which functions as storage too, because this house doesn't have a warehouse. We decided to install a full black cabinet like the one we found inspiration for in the P application, as well as the backsplash which we just changed to a dominant white color to make it look brighter and cleaner. For kitchen decoration items, we still choose those that are more functional and those that are used more often, without too many variations and not too concerned with aesthetics. Kitchen renovation process of livin's home. When this house was handed over from the developer, this kitchen area was not there at all. Previously I shared a glass door that leads to the kitchen, which is adjacent to the dining room. This is the first renovation process, so I moved the glass door back so that there was space for the dining room (slide 2). The length of this house was initially only up to the sofa (slide 5). In slides 3 & 4, this is the initial view of the kitchen which is in the living room area which I then renovated and built a kitchen on the remaining land behind. I divided the remaining land into 2 to build a kitchen and garden, the concept of this kitchen is semi-outdoor slide 6 & 7). I installed a sliding door that leads to the garden, so I can open and close the door and the air circulation in the kitchen remains good. This kitchen set uses HPL with a combination of Natural Wood and White. Because I want it to look clean. I also customized a full kitchen set so that I can store items that are rarely used, so I utilize all the available space. A small change to our PVC ceiling is by adding a 𝙬𝒐𝙤𝒅 𝒃𝙚𝒂𝙢𝒔 directly creating a contrasting texture and color to the overall 𝒘𝙝𝒊𝙩𝒆 𝒌𝙞𝒕𝙘𝒉𝙚𝒏 theme. The texture & color of the wood adds character & makes the atmosphere warmer.
